28 Artists Selected for the Flagpole Art Project for
The Friends of Verdugo Hills Cemetery in Tujunga
for Its Centennial Celebration
Auction CONCLUDED - Saturday April 30, 2022 - Item Below SOLD
FRANK WHIPPLE
“if lips could only whistle, then they would…”
SOLD
Artist’s Statement - I’ve worked primarily with hand-cut vintage paper ephemera for nearly 30 years, although occasionally incorporating textiles, wood and metal elements. For this project, I’ve combined paper collage with rusted metal and aged wooden scraps to create a sort of visual pun on antiquated notions about burial sites and associated whimsical folklore.
The expressions “spinning in one’s grave” and spooked humor regarding the courage to be taken from “whistling past the graveyard” both informed my choices in crafting the piece and influenced the imagery
intended to suggest ghosts, skeletons and inevitable yet unknowable mystery of death.

Friends of Verdugo Hills Cemetery
Auction Fundraiser for
Centennial Celebration
In 1914, a year after Tujunga's Little Lands Colony was formed, a wooden flagpole was erected outside the Clubhouse, now known as Bolton Hall Museum. Standing 40 feet tall, and cut from a single 200 year-old Douglas fir beam, it stood for 93 years before damage necessitated its removal. The top 4 foot portion is on permanent display at the museum, and the middle portion was placed in storage until now, to be used as a way to *pay it forward* and help another local landmark, the Verdugo Hills Cemetery.
The historic flagpole remnant was cut into a number of pieces, each measuring approximately 5" x 5" in diameter and 1.5" in depth. More than two dozen participating artists were asked to transform their piece of flagpole to create original art using any media, with any subject matter as inspiration.
The results of their creative endeavor are available exclusively through this auction!
All of the original artwork was generously donated by the artists, with 100% of the proceeds from this auction going towards continuing the restoration and renewal projects and ongoing maintenance of the cemetery.
Auction ends Saturday April 30, 2022 at 12 p.m. PST.
https://www.biddingowl.com/Auction/home.cfm?auctionID=29915
You may bid on as many items as you like! First, you must register as a bidder by clicking on the log in/register link at the top of any page and activating your Bidding Owl account.
Winners will be notified via email and online payment will be due at this time. Free local pick-up in Tujunga, CA, or shipping to winner's location for an additional fee will be arranged at this time.
